It is believed that the first European style wines were brought to India by the Portuguese. Francisco de Almeida, 1450–1510, was the Portuguese colonial administrator who was the first viceroy of the Portuguese possessions of Goa, Daman and Diu in India (1505–1509). Warren Hastings, 1732–1818, British colonial administrator who as governor-general of India instituted British control of the Indian government.
Warren Edwardes was named after Warren Hastings. His father, Lt. Col Cyril Edwardes DeLima lived near the Viceroy's statue in Calcutta in 1952.
